Lean Six Sigma is an operational management concept that is a synergy of Lean and Six Sigma. With Lean Six Sigma, companies can earn Lean’s “speed” and “quality” that Six Sigma has. This methodology leads the company to the elimination of the seven wastes that occur in manufacturing or services. The quality of outputs that minimize the creation of defective products (average 3.4 defects per million opportunities / defects per million opportunities (DPMO)). Lean Six Sigma uses the concept of the DMAIC phase in the process, as it does in pure Six Sigma. DMAIC are the phases to go through any improvement project, which stands for Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control. In each phase, different activities will be perform according to the conditions occurring during the project.
In undertaking Lean Six Sigma initiatives and executing the project, the company must form a special team of belts and team members. Belt itself is an individual who has the ability and knowledge in applying Lean Six Sigma. The hierarchy of the belt from beginner to advance includes Yellow Belt, Green Belt, Black Belt and Master Black Belt.
Lean and Six Sigma integration
You can do Integration between Lean and Six Sigma through 2 different approaches. Generally combine these two methods by integrating the tools used, called Partial Integration. The second approach is comprehension, otherwise known as Total Integration.
This integration is done before the project begins. The simplest example is when the team does project selection, the project will be divided into Six Sigma project (which generally uses DMAIC or DMADV methodology), as well as non-Six Sigma project.
- Partial Integration Lean Six Sigma
Partial Integration is a combination of Lean tools into Six Sigma problem solving methodology. The tools in question are 5S, Kanban, SMED, and Kaizen. Which are incorporate into the curriculum and DMAIC phases. In this type of integration, the Lean tools used are limit to the needs during the project. And their application is specific to appropriate Green Belt or Black Belt areas and projects.
Six Sigma practitioners assessed the Lean tools as an added value to the Six Sigma problem solving process in the DMAIC phase. Meanwhile, Lean practitioners will look through Lean’s point of view, the QCC project with a more standard work structure and rely on more data.
- Total Integration Six Sigma
Total Integration combines Lean and Six Sigma in its entirety, from the purpose, the approach and the methodology, not just adopting tools. Determination of total integration is done before the project starts. For example, the initial step to start the Total Integration Lean Six Sigma project is to equip the change agents with the Green Belt and Black Belt curriculum while at the same time organizing them with an understanding of operational excellence, waste, quick wins, and other Lean tools and methods.
Which is more appropriate? Both equally provide added value. It will return to the organization’s management policies or decisions.
